The Carolinas were named after King Charles I of England.

The state’s nickname, the Palmetto State, was coined in honor of the state tree, the sabal palmetto. During the Revolutionary War these trees were used to build forts because their soft wood could absorb cannonball impacts. READ MORE ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA

The state tree of South Carolina, the Palmetto Tree, was used to build the walls for a fort on Sullivan Island. The rubbery trees were a great defense as cannon balls bounced right off them! The first shots of the Civil War were in South Carolina at Fort Sumter. Johnston, South Carolina is called the Peach Capital of the World. There is a giant water tower in the shape of a peach near Gaffney. Before South Carolina adopted the Palmetto State as its nickname, it was called the Iodine State. The official state dance is the Shag.

Wild pigs, bobcats, gray foxes, and river otters are some of the mammals that live here. Several of the state’s avian species are named after the Carolinas, including the Carolina chickadee and Carolina wren. South Carolina is home to reptiles such as American alligators, corn snakes, and gopher tortoises. The state can be divided into three geographic areas. From east to west: the Atlantic coastal plain, the Piedmont, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Locally, the coastal plain is referred to as the Low Country, and the other two regions as Up Country. The Atlantic Coastal Plain makes up two thirds of the state. Its eastern border is the Sea Islands, a chain of tidal and barrier islands. Experts don’t agree on the source of Rhode Island’s name. One explanation is that explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano compared the land he found to the Greek island of Rhodes, and that inspired colonist Roger Williams to name the colony Rhode Island. Another explanation is that Dutch explorer Adriaen Block called the land Roodt Eylandt, meaning “red island,” because of the red clay at its shore—and the name later evolved into Rhode Island.

The Tennis Hall of Fame is located in Rhode Island. All the residents of the state live within about 30 miles from the water. It was the last of the original thirteen colonies to become a state. The oldest carousel in the United States is the Flying Horse Carousel located in Watch Hill. The official state rock is Cumberlandite. This is a rare rock and is only found in the state. It gets its nickname from having so much ocean coastline for such a small state. Rhode Island made the first law that prohibited slavery in 1652.

The state rock, Cumberlandite, comes from Cumberland, Rhode Island. Made of iron and titanium, it’s slightly magnetic with a silvery sheen.

—Actress Viola Davis, actor and songwriter George Michael Cohan, and record-setting mountain climber Annie Smith Peck were all Rhode Island residents.

—Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay is famous for its clams. Fried clam cakes, clam chowder, steamers (steamed clams), and stuffed clams are favorite snacks. READ MORE HERE

Rhode Island is nicknamed the Ocean State and has a number of oceanfront beaches. It is mostly flat with no real mountains, and the state's highest natural point is Jerimoth Hill, 812 feet (247 m) above sea level.

Rhode Island has two distinct natural regions. Eastern Rhode Island contains the lowlands of the Narragansett Bay, while Western Rhode Island forms part of the New England Upland. Rhode Island's forests are part of the Northeastern coastal forestsecoregion.
