How did Montana get its name: Montana’s name comes from the Spanish word “Montaña” and the Latin word “Montana,” which means “mountain” or “mountainous country.”

The state was given its name by Spanish explorers.

Montana holds the world record for the greatest temperature change in 24 hours. In just a day's time the temperature rose a whopping 103 degrees Fahrenheit.

The highest point in Montana is Granite Peak, located in the Beartooth Range in the Rockies.

Montana has  two state gemstones, agate and sapphire.

The state is known for having two very different geographic regions. The Rocky Mountain region covers the western two-fifths of the state. The Yellowstone River is the longest free-flowing (undammed) river in the contiguous United States. The longest river in the U.S. by miles, the Missouri River, begins in Montana at the “Three Forks” - the intersection of the Gallatin, Madison and Jefferson Rivers.

Flathead Lake is the largest fresh water lake west of the Mississippi River.

Glacier National Park has 250 lakes in its boundaries.

The North Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, located at Gardiner, is the original entrance to the world’s first National Park when it opened.

The official State Song is "Montana" it was written by Charles C. and dates back to September 1910 and was adopted as the state song on February 20, 1945 

The three largest cities in Montana are Billings, Missoula and Great Falls

The State Motto is "Oro y plata" the State Motto is Spanish, translated it means "Gold and Silver" and is a reference to the historical impact from early mining

A brief history of Montana - In 1803, the majority of the region was subject to the Louisiana Purchase. The first permanent settlement was established in 1841.
