The first people to live on the land now called Arkansas arrived around 11,650 B.C. Thousands of years later, around A.D. 650, a group of Native Americans called the Plum Bayou built mysterious mounds of dirt that can still be seen today at Toltec Mounds Archaeological State Park. Other Native American tribes who lived on the land included the Caddo, Chickasaw, Osage, Quapaw, and Tunica. READ MORE ABOUT ARKANSAS

Arkansas Doodles

I don’t know if you saw the name of this site but this whole thing was born from my (Stevie) love of doodling. I was the doodler in school, drawing on the edge of my notebooks and sometimes in the middle ;) Please leave doodlers alone by the way. I never once had a teacher bother me about my doodles and I’m so thankful.

In 1861 at the start of the Civil War, Arkansas was a Confederate state. That meant it wanted to break away from the United States and form another country with other nearby states. But the loyalties of Arkansas’ residents were divided: Many fought in favor of the Union. (The Confederacy would lose the war, keeping the Union intact.)

History was made in 1957 when nine African-American students were escorted by Army troops into Little Rock Central High School, which previously only allowed white students to attend. This was an important milestone in the nation’s civil rights movement. READ MORE ABOUT ARKANSAS

Ivory-Billed Woodpecker

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker is probably extinct. Partners in Flight rates the species as a 20 out of 20 on the Continental Concern Score and places it on the Red Watch List. Ivory-billed Woodpecker is also listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, and federally endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Destruction of the woodpecker's mature or old-growth forest habitat caused populations to decline, and by the 1880s the species was rare. Forest destruction accelerated during the World War I and II war efforts, destroying much of its habitat. Although the species was thought to be extinct, it was rediscovered in Arkansas in 2004. However, extensive searches from 2006–2010 did not produce any definitive evidence of a surviving population. READ MORE ABOUT THE IVORY-BILLED WOODPECKER

Georgia was named after King George II, who approved the colony’s charter in 1732.

Wonder how Georgia got its nickname? Cherokee Indians grew peaches in Georgia in the mid-1700s, and today the state produces about 2.6 million bushels a year, making it the third biggest producer of peaches in the United States

Black bears, bobcats, deer, and gophers are common in Georgia, and off the coast you can spot manatees, right whales, and humpback whales. Georgia is also home to bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and woodpeckers.
