The agricultural community is strong in the Bluegrass State; Kentucky had 85,000 farms in 2011, according to the Kentucky field office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Kentucky farm size averaged 164 acres.

Horses were the leading source of farm income for Kentucky farmers, followed by broilers (chickens), cattle, tobacco, soybeans and corn. Kentucky is home to some of the world's leading thoroughbred farms and thoroughbred auctions as well as prestigious events such as the Kentucky World's Championship Horse Show and the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park. Modern archaeologists classify Kentucky's prehistoric past into six cultures that spanned 13,000 BC to 1,650 AD. These cultures were the Paleo-Indian culture, the Archaic culture, the Woodland culture, the Adena culture, the Mississippian culture and the Fort Ancient culture. From about 1650 until the arrival of the first white settlers, Native American wars broke out over control of the "Great Meadow" between the Shawnee tribes from north of the Ohio River and the Cherokee and Chickasaw tribes located south of the Cumberland River. Most experts think that the name Kentucky comes from a Native American language, but they don’t agree on which one. It may have come from the Wyandot name for the area, Kah-ten-tah-teh, which can be roughly translated as “Land of Tomorrow.” It’s also possible that it comes from the Shawnee name for the area, Kain-tuck-ee, which means “At the Head of the River.” Or it may have been derived from the Iroquoian or Mohawk word Kentucke meaning “among the meadows.” READ MORE ABOUT KENTUCKY FROM NAT GEO

Black bears, bobcats, red foxes, minks, and river otters are common Kentucky mammals. Gaze at the sky, and you might see a peregrine falcon, bald eagle, mountain bluebird, Kentucky warbler or northern cardinal (the state bird). Check the ground and trees for reptiles like the six-lined racerunner, broadhead skink, or Eastern corn snake. Internet lore that would have you believe Bourbon County is among the state's 37 dry counties is actually false.

Speaking of Bourbon, this beverage takes its name from Bourbon County, where it was first distilled.

Barren County has some of the state's most fertile soil, and was even named rural America's best place to live by Progressive Farmer magazine. (Seriously.)

Frederick Vinson, who later became the 13th Chief Justice of the United States, began life in a Louisa County jailhouse.

Maryland was named after Queen Henrietta Maria of England. She was married to King Charles I, who granted permission for Maryland to become a colony.

Legend has it that Maryland’s nicknamed the Old Line State in honor of 400 Revolutionary War soldiers who faced off against 10,000 British soldiers in a battle in 1776. These soldiers, which were called the “Maryland Line,” held off the British just long enough to allow the rest of the American army—lead by George Washington—to escape. It also experiences a wide variety of weather and all four seasons.

Maryland is known for its tasty seafood, especially crabs. During lunch at Chesapeake Bay, more crab cakes are sold than hot dogs and hamburgers combined!

In June 1608, Captain John Smith began his historic exploration of the Chesapeake Bay. He compiled the information for his history and map during two six-week expeditions in which he traversed three thousand miles of the bay and its tributaries on an open barge. Smith’s map of the Chesapeake Bay, published in 1624 in The Generall History of Virginia, New-England and the Summer Islands, was carefully executed, highly detailed and amazingly accurate while his description of the Chesapeake could easily make Smith one of the foremost promoters for colonization on the shores of the Bay: READ MORE HERE

Hawaii is the most isolated population center on Earth: It’s about 2,400 miles from the Mainland U.S., the closest landmass. Because of that, it has its own time zone, Hawaii Standard Time, and does not observe daylight saving time. Beginning the second Sunday in March, Hawaii is three hours behind the Pacific Time Zone (i.e., West Coast of the U.S.); starting on the first Sunday in November, it is two hours behind.

In actuality, the state also encompasses the northwestern Hawaiian islands, a group of islets, seamounts and shoals that extends 1,350 miles northwest of the “main” islands. Harboring an amazing diversity of seabirds and marine life, they are collectively known as the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, a World Heritage Site and the largest contiguous fully protected conservation area under the U.S. flag. About 1,500 years ago a group of canoes came ashore to some of the islands now known as Hawaii. These people—the islands’ first known residents—had rowed about 2,000 miles from the Marquesas Islands to get here. People from what is now Tahiti—over 2,500 miles away—followed 500 years later. These cultures brought traditions of their own and over time created new traditions such as surfing, hula dancing, and exchanging flower garlands called leis.

In 1810 Kamehameha became Hawaii’s first king. The islands continued to have royal rulers into the 1880s. In 1898 Hawaii became a U.S. territory.
