Delaware has so many nicknames!

First State: first to ratify the Constitution.

Diamond State: Legend has it that Thomas Jefferson called Delaware a “jewel” among the states because of its strategic location along the East Coast.

Blue Hen State: One form of entertainment during the Revolutionary War for Delaware soldiers was rooster fighting. It was so popular that Delaware Soldiers brought their own Blue Hens with them during their stay in the army. The Blue Hen was noted for its fighting ability, and because of their bravery, the men of Captain Jonathan Caldwell’s company were soon compared to this breed.

Peach State: the first state to produce peaches commercially.

Beavers form monogamous pairs and usually live in family groups of up to 8 related individuals called colonies. The younger siblings stay with their parents for up to 2 years, helping with infant care, food collection, and dam building.

>>  Beaver families are territorial and defend against other families.

>>  In order to warn family members of danger, beavers slap their tails against the water, creating a powerful noise.

>>  Beavers are primarily crepuscular. They are only occasionally seen during the day. They usually wake at dusk and are also active at dawn.

>>  The tails are one of the defining characteristics of beavers. They are broad and flat with large, blackish scales.

>>  Another characteristic of beavers is their teeth. Like all rodents, beavers have large central incisors (front teeth) that are always growing. They must keep them trimmed by gnawing bark. MORE BEAVER FACTS HERE

Hawaii is the most isolated population center on Earth: It’s about 2,400 miles from the Mainland U.S., the closest landmass. Because of that, it has its own time zone, Hawaii Standard Time, and does not observe daylight saving time. Beginning the second Sunday in March, Hawaii is three hours behind the Pacific Time Zone (i.e., West Coast of the U.S.); starting on the first Sunday in November, it is two hours behind.

Say “Hawaii” and people usually think of Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, Niihau, Kahoolawe and Hawaii. In actuality, the state also encompasses the northwestern Hawaiian islands, a group of islets, seamounts and shoals that extends 1,350 miles northwest of the “main” islands. Harboring an amazing diversity of seabirds and marine life, they are collectively known as the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, a World Heritage Site and the largest contiguous fully protected conservation area under the U.S. flag. Papahanaumokuakea covers 582,578 square miles of the Pacific and is bigger than all of America’s national parks combined. MORE HAWAII FACTS FROM HAWAIIAN AIRLINES

About 1,500 years ago a group of canoes came ashore to some of the islands now known as Hawaii. These people—the islands’ first known residents—had rowed about 2,000 miles from the Marquesas Islands to get here. People from what is now Tahiti—over 2,500 miles away—followed 500 years later. These cultures brought traditions of their own and over time created new traditions such as surfing, hula dancing, and exchanging flower garlands called leis.

In 1810 Kamehameha became Hawaii’s first king. The islands continued to have royal rulers into the 1880s. In 1898 Hawaii became a U.S. territory. It was named the 50th state in 1959, and to this day you can still visit Iolani Palace—the only royal building on U.S. soil. READ MORE ABOUT HAWAII FROM NAT GEO

Europeans landed in the 16th century, with Spanish explorers leading the way. But when Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, it also gained control of California. That didn’t last long: in 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, California became a U.S. territory. When gold was struck in 1849 at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, more than 100,000 people, nicknamed “forty-niners,” rushed to California to seek their fortunes. Just a year later, in 1850, California officially became a state. READ MORE ABOUT CALIFORNIA
